Sometimes you just know that an event is going to be a big success before the chefs have even picked their knives up.

The team at Hispi were buzzing to welcome the Michelin starred Angela Hartnett and her partner Neil Borthwick, another big name in the game, to their West Didsbury bistro. And that excitement was reciprocated by the two visitors from the Big Smoke who were there to support their protégé Gary Usher (they are both his former bosses).

Angela, a chef who has trained under kitchen juggernauts Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, left her one starred Murano restaurant for the day to pass the torchon to her former chef de partie. We were blown away by her warmth and hospitality – from the commis and KPs, to the exec chefs and customers, she went above and beyond. She was even nice to me!

Standout dishes from the five-course feast were the pumpkin tortelli with Parmesan and Amaretti, and the rare veal sirloin with scorched onions and kale. Although the highlight was the pudpud – the Paris Brest. A golden choux pastry filled with praline cream – the brest was the tits.
