The Project Natural Selection Design Host Workshop – ‘How to take great photos of your tea’

Location CulturePlex, Manchester

The Objective We were buzzing when CulturePlex Manchester contacted us to host a masterclasses.  Subject: How to take great photos of your tea.  CulturePlex Manchester, is a cool place to hang out, meet new people, watch a film, listen to a talk, get some work done and eat some food.  Food and drink photography is totally our bag and this workshop was a great way to spend our Monday evening.

The Beginning  The group was a really cool mix of people, some wanting to excel their skills for business; from the marketing, media and PR industry.  Some of the guys were simply looking at a new hobby and broadening their interests…one of our attendees starred in Line of Duty, big fans, so that was pretty cool!  The basis of our workshop was ‘ Your best camera is the one you have with you’. Smart phone cameras, are generally of high quality now. We wanted to give the workshop attendees the best NSD tips that would give them the best shot at taking quality photos on their phone.  Everyone, tends to have a phone on them, so the group used what they had for the duration of the workshop.

The Output

Main areas of focus during the session: Lighting, rule of space, zoom versus crop, backgrounds, editing.  We were so lucky, that just by chance there was Mexican chefs working at CulturePlex the same night, making fresh salsa dishes.  They knocked up some really good looking dishes for us to photograph.  We used our backdrop products signature to NSD, more about these on our workshop blog! The session was super relaxed, and as we had fresh food to shoot, we tested all teaching points.  We had the tunes playing, a few beers and the group just bounced off each other really well, sharing some top ideas.

Watch this space because we’ll be doing more and more workshops in 2020.
